Sally Snowman is named lighthouse keeper at Boston Light.

(Sept.) The first woman appointed to the position, she is a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and is also the first civilian keeper since the Coast Guard took over responsibility for the lighthouse in 1941. Snowman becomes the last Coast Guard light keeper in the U.S. when she retires on December 31, 2023.
